Journeys
Supports for Older Adults with Developmental Disabilities
Journeys started as a project to connect seniors with developmental disabilities to existing seniors services in the community. We quickly realized that our folks needed some extra help to be successful on their terms.
Our support has evolved with our clients' needs and now includes all aspects of their lives; social, emotional, residential, vocational, medical, psychological, nutritional, financial planning and family support.
Journeys takes pride in the fact that we create our support models around the individuals we serve. Our clients provide regular feedback and can make changes in all aspects of their support, whether it be the staff they are matched with, their meals, weekly activities or how they want their home decorated.
Our focus and passion is to support our clients on their terms through offering exciting opportunities to learn, grow and connect while pursuing their dreams.
"Co-creating meaningful lives for all abilities"
About our support...
- We work with individuals and their personal networks to "dream" about their journeys, now and in the future.
- We provide creative support ranging from a few hours a week to 24-hour, adaptive and flexible support for individuals to meet their goals and dreams.
- We help people to find appropriate resources and services.
- We provide opportunities and support for people to create and maintain positive social relationships with peers of their choosing.
- We assist people to find and integrate into activities that are important to them.
- We are passionate about challenging our clients and staff to think "outside the box" and to incorporate fun, laughter and positive attitudes into their everyday lives.
- We work with other services sharing knowledge and information about aging and/or disability.
Highlights of the program...
- Workshops we have offered to folks we support include Healthy Lifestyles, Leisure Planning, Personal Safety, Future's Planning, Positive Thinking, Laughter, Music Therapy and more.
- We facilitate weekly activities as directed by the folks in the program.
- We have created a community pantry and 6-week meal plan for individuals who live in our staffed residences that offers healthy food with lots of variety at a low cost.
- We organize day, overnight and weeklong trips for the people we support. These staffed trips offer people the opportunity to visit places of their choosing as safely and economically as possible.
- At our clients' suggestions, we created a men's group and women's group that offer opportunities to socialize and participate in weekly or monthly activities.
- We are experts in the field of aging and developmental disabilities and are strong advocates for our clients whether it be for funding, appropriate health care or their right to choose their own path in life.
